Beached Walrus! |

One very interesting fly out we have is to Cape Pierce on the coast of Bristol Bay. It is part of the Togiak Wildlife Refuge. Pacific walrus haul out on several beaches between Cape Pierce and Nanvak Bay. The area was a haulout site historically, but was abandoned sometime during the first half of this century and not reoccupied until 1981. These are all-male herds, and their summer peak numbers range from 1,000 – 8,000 animals. Walrus also haul out at Round Island in Togiak Bay. Walrus arrive at Cape Pierce beaches by June, and their numbers increase through August and September. Walrus numbers vary daily, and factors such as inclement weather and disturbances effect numbers at haulouts. Therefore, visitors are not guaranteed walrus will be hauled out during their stay.
Typically we land on Sanor Lake to avoid marine mammal disturbance. Sanor Lake is approximately 2.3 miles hiking distance from Lee’s Landing on the southwest shore of Nanvak Bay. Here we meet the park staff and continue along a cliff trail for best veiwing. If this is of interest to you, please mark the box in the questionaire after booking so we can make the necessary arrangements. |
